HindAyan: Ride on for Health, Honour, and Heritage!
India has not won a single Olympic medal in cycling. The last Indian cyclists to compete in the Olympics were in 1964. This painful gap is not just a statistic—it’s a wake-up call. HindAyan was born from a dream: to build a cycling movement that nurtures national talent, promotes a culture of fitness and sustainability, and celebrates the unity and heritage of our great country.
We began this initiative in 2019, but the global pandemic brought it to a sudden halt. Undeterred, we resumed in February 2023 with a pilot edition, where teams from the Indian Army and Navy joined hands—and pedals—with us. Since then, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has been supporting this bold experiment.
HindAyan is more than a cyclothon. It’s a symbol of resilience. For over four years, without corporate sponsorship, it has moved forward, fuelled only by the dedication of volunteers and the goodwill of friends from the armed forces, civil services, and police. Together, we are not just creating an event—we are building a national legacy on two wheels.
About the Organiser:
VISHNUDAS CHAPKE, also known as 'Vishnu da Gama'
He is the first Indian to have circumnavigated the globe overland, traversing 36 countries across five continents to raise awareness about climate change. He has had the honour of planting trees alongside the President of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), as well as several environment ministers around the world. (You may Google Vishnudas Chapke or Vishnu da Gama.)
He received appreciation from the then-President of the Republic of Chile, Hon. Ms Michelle Bachelet, for his service during the forest-fire emergency in Chile in January 2017.
He is a Special Invitee Member of the Fit India Cycling Advisory Committee (FI-CAC), constituted under the chairmanship of the Hon. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Here are the reasons why we started HindAyan
After the trip of Solo Circumnavigation of Globe, Vishnudas received several lucrative job offers from multinational companies in India, Mexico, and the USA—a dream for millions. Instead, he chose to create a sporting legacy in India and continue his work in the field of climate change. He started the HindAyan Cycle Expedition in 2019 to promote cycling as a form of green transport.
1. To help India win an Olympic medal in cycling
Despite the Olympic Games featuring 22 cycling events, offering 66 medals, India is yet to secure a medal in cycling. Moreover, no Indian cyclist has competed in the Olympics since 1964. We perceive this as a challenge and aspire to play an instrumental role in helping India send a competitive cycling team to the Olympics.
2. To create a platform for cross-country cycling
At present, adventure cyclists from the armed forces and state police travel to the USA, UK, and France to participate in cycle races, as there is no comparable platform available to them in India. We aim to create such a platform in India that also attracts foreign cyclists.
3. To develop a cycling culture in India
There is an urgent need to develop a cycling culture in India and build the necessary infrastructure to support it. This will help reduce carbon emissions substantially, benefiting both citizens and the environment.
