In 2018, Indian athlete Avinash Sable broke the national record for the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:29.80. But few know that this record stood unbeaten for an incredible 37 years, held by none other than Gopal Saini, a champion athlete from the 1980s. Saini, born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, in 1954, initially aspired to be a wrestler. However, after completing his schooling, he discovered his true passion in athletics and began a remarkable journey in the sport.
Saini got his first international recognition in 1975, winning a gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Tehran meet. Three years later, he clinched the silver medal for the same event at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok. His hard work and discipline earned him a spot on the Indian team for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he represented the country in men’s 5000m race.
Saini’s career continued to flourish in 1981, a year that would prove to be one of his most memorable. Competing at the Asian Championships, he won gold in the 5000m and claimed a silver in his specialty, the 3000m steeplechase, setting a national record of 8:30.88. This record would go on to remain unchallenged until 2018. That same year, he was honored with the Arjuna Award and the Maharana Pratap Award. His achievements were further recognized when he was appointed an honorary Sub Inspector in the Rajasthan Police. In 1982, Saini continued his success, winning another silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian.
Today, Gopal Saini serves as the President of the Rajasthan Athletics Association. Reflecting on the growth of Indian athletics, he acknowledges the importance of sports science, saying, “We are still not 100 percent in terms of adopting sports science, but I can see that it has helped India a great deal.” His legacy, from his record-setting performances to his contributions to Indian athletics, continues to inspire young athletes to pursue their dreams with dedication and perseverance.
